Vicky Phelan gives positive update after radiotherapy left her unable to walk

Taking to Instagram, the CervicalCheck campaigner revealed that she is back on her “own two feet.”

“I'm BACK! For now anyway…” she began captioning a post featuring a carousel of pictures of Phelan enjoying Afternoon Tea with her mother and godmother.

“I am finally back walking on my own two feet for more than a few feet without having to use a four wheel or three wheel mobility aid and, oh boy, does it feel good.”

“My back is still not great and I can only walk very short distances and am still in pain BUT it is manageable AND I can get out of the house.”

“And boy have I gotten out of the house in style this week,” she continued.

“I wanted to treat my mother and my godmother to afternoon tea at @theadaremanor for their birthdays, which they both celebrated in March.

"Two weeks ago, I honestly thought it would never happen BUT the human body and the human spirit are AMAZING things.”

“And so, today my aunt picked me up from my house and whisked us off to Adare Manor where we spent the whole afternoon drinking various different teas and coffees and enjoying the savoury and sweet treats that staff kept bringing to our table.

"We had a most fabulous afternoon and made more wonderful memories.”

It comes as Vicky told followers in March that she had “never been so sick.”

Sharing a snap of her hospital bed she said that after starting radiotherapy for a tumour on her spine she was left in unbearable pain.

“So, today, I am going home after spending the past two weeks in this room at @milfordcarecentre recovering from complications from my radiotherapy treatment.”

“I have NEVER been so sick or in as much pain as I have been over the past two weeks!!! The radiotherapy increased the amount of pain I was in and also incapacitated me leaving me unable to walk without assistance.”

“I am only now, in the past few days able to walk without either a 4-wheeler or a Zimmer frame. Walking long distances is still beyond me but I hope I will get there again,” she said in the heartbreaking post.

“I only finished my last session of radiotherapy last Monday and it can take a couple of weeks for the effects to be felt so I am really hoping that I will be moving around a bit more freely in a couple of weeks time but I am also acutely aware that I may never regain what I had…”

Vicky, who recently struck up a close friendship with Charlie Bird following his motor neuron disease diagnosis, said she made the hard decision not to join him this weekend at #ClimbWithCharlie at Croagh Patrick.

“I am simply not well enough either physically or mentally,” she said.

“The past few weeks have really knocked the stuffing out of me and I need to focus on just getting well again. I have already been in touch with Charlie and he has been great about it.”

The former RTE broadcast is set to climb the mountain with thousands of people to raise money for Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA) and Pieta House.

Almost €850,000 has been raised for the event so far.
