Two people had a lucky escape in the early hours of this morning after a fire gutted their apartment in Dublin city.

The occupants escaped the flames by running to a balcony at the back of the building on the junction of Francis Street and Dean Swift Square in the south city after the blaze broke out on the third floor of the complex.

They were rescued, along with a cat, by members of Dublin Fire Brigade using an extendable ladder.

The two were treated for the effects of smoke inhalation at the scene but did not require hospitalisation.

The fire was reported at 5.30am and crews from Tara Street and Dolphin's Barn stations rushed to the scene.

Four fire tenders, a rescue tender, a turntable ladder and a district officer from Dublin Fire Brigade attended.

Extensive damage was caused to the apartment by the fire, which is believed to have been caused accidentally.
