Two motorcyclists were killed following a collision on the M50 earlier today, Gardai have confirmed.

The men, aged in their 50s and 60s, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Emergency services rushed to the scene of the incident on the M50 northbound between Junction 9 Red Cow and Junction 7 Lucan before 2pm on Friday.

Earlier this evening, Gardai confirmed that there was one fatality from the horror crash which caused the closure of northbound lanes for several hours.

In a further statement today, a Garda spokesperson confirmed that sadly a man in his 50s and another man in his 60s lost their lives in the collision.

"Gardaí are investigating all the circumstances of a fatal road traffic collision that occurred shortly before 2pm on Friday, 3rd June, 2022, on the M50 Northbound," the statement said.

The collision, which occurred between Junction 9 and Junction 7, involved two motorcycles and a truck.

"The two motorcyclists (males aged in their 50s and 60s) were pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver was uninjured."

"The road, which was closed for a number of hours between Junction 9 and Junction 7 Northbound as Gardaí investigated the incident, has now reopened fully. Forensic Collision Investigators have concluded a technical examination of the scene."

Gardaí said they are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

"Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) who were travelling on the M50 Northbound before Junction 9 prior to the road being closed or any road users who may have passed the scene are asked to please make this footage available to Gardaí."

They also reiterated calls for people not to share graphic images from the crash which have been posted online.

"An Garda Síochána is aware of graphic images of this collision which are being shared across social media and messaging applications and is appealing to the public not to share this material as it is disrespectful to the deceased and their family and friends.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact Lucan Garda Station on 016667300, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station."

Following the incident today, Traffic queued up between the Red Cow and was allowed to get past the collision scene, but all northbound lanes were then closed again, with motorists advised to avoid the M50 if at all possible and use diversions as the northbound section will remain closed for several hours.

In a statement posted on Twitter this evening, gardai said: "An Garda Síochána is aware of graphic images of today's Fatal Road Traffic collision which are being shared across social media and messaging apps. An Garda Síochána appeals to everybody, DO NOT SHARE This Material, it is disrespectful to the deceased, their family and friends!!"

A spokesman said earlier: "Gardaí are currently at the scene of a serious RTC on the M50 northbound.

"The road is currently closed between junctions 9 and 7 northbound with diversions in place. Gardaí are encouraging all road users to avoid the area if possible."

Dublin Fire Brigade tweeted: “We're currently attending a serious road traffic collision on @M50Dublin J9 Red Cow Northbound. All lanes are closed at present. Motorists are advised to follow the diversion route from J9 Northbound back to J7.”
