People have been leaving numerous heartfelt condolences to a set of Limerick twins who died on the same day.

Both Mary McKie and Archie Brown, aged 89, from Ballynanty, passed away on Saturday.

It is understood that Archie and Mary had been in ill health in recent times. Mary died peacefully in University Hospital Limerick, while Archie passed away at home surrounded by his loving family.

Mary was laid to rest in Mount St Oliver Cemetery on Tuesday and Archie's burial took place this morning in Mount St Lawrence (Extension) Cemetery.

On his RIP.ie page it states that Archie, of Ballynanty Road, Limerick, late of Bus Eireann, Roxboro, Athlunkard Boat Club, Shannon RFC and Fanore, Co Clare, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family.

“Beloved husband of Anne. Dearly loved father and grandfather. Predeceased by his twin sister Mary McKie on the same day,” it adds.

“Sadly missed by his sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, nephews, nieces, brother-in-law, extended family and friends."

Mary’s death notices states that she is the "beloved wife of the late John and dearest mother of the Greg, Deirdre, Mary, Phyllis and the late John.

“Sadly missed by her children, daughter-in-law Marcella, sons-in-law Ger & Michael, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, her twin brother Archie, other family and friends.”

One of the many messages on the condolences section for Archie reads: “Our deepest condolences to Ann and all the Brown family on Archie's passing.

“Many fond memories of both of you in the Boat club. Archie's love and dedication to his sporting clubs was an example to all. Your family continued that tradition. May his gentle soul rest in peace.”

Another adds: “Deepest sympathy to Harold and family on your dads passing from this life."

Another reads: “Condolences to Ann and family on the sad passing of Archie. Thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very difficult time may his gentle soul rest in peace."

For Mary people have written: “To the McKie Family and Extended Family please Accept our Deepest Sympathy on the Passing of your Lovely Mother. Mary was the Heart and Soul of that Corner. Mary may the Soft Winds of Heaven blow Gently on your Resting Place.”

"Sincere sympathy to Greg Marcella and all Mckie and Brown families on death of your dear Mam Mary and her twin brother Archie. May they both rest in Peace. You’re in our thoughts and prayers at this time," another tribute reads.

Canon Donal McNamara said it is “very poignant for the two of them to go together”.

Canon McNamara told the Limerick Leader he had been bringing Holy Communion on the First Friday of the month to Mary for years.

“She would always tell me when I'd go that, ‘I have a brother, Archie, he is my twin’. They were very close,” said Canon McNamara.
