'Inspiration' Tributes paid to young Roscommon athlete Gabriella Weaver (23) after tragic death

Tributes are being paid to a young Roscommon sportswoman who died tragically earlier this week.

Gabriella Weaver (23) from near Elphin, Co. Roscommon, died following a fatal car accident in Spain, it has been reported.

The talented swimmer, who has represented Ireland with the Irish National Swim Team, has been described as having “an absolute heart of gold” by friends in a series of touching tributes.

Trident Swimming Club in Carrick-on-Shannon, where Ms Weaver was a coach and competitor, shared a testimonial on their social media page and said that the young woman was “an inspiration” and “a great role model.”

The club was founded by Gabriella’s mother, Samantha Weaver, who also acted as head coach.

“Trident SC would like to extend deepest sympathies to Samantha Weaver, founder and former head coach, Dean, Eddie, Will, Luke and Robin on the tragic loss of their daughter and sister Gabriella.

“Gabi a former member and Samantha’s motivation in setting up Trident SC, achieved much success with the club, this included representing Ireland on the Irish National swim team.

“Gabi was an inspiration to all our younger members and always had a smile and an encouraging word, a great role model.

“She will be greatly missed by us all at Trident. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.”

The Roscommon Community Games board also paid tribute to the late athlete, writing: “Roscommon Community Games County Executive extend our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Gabriella Weaver who passed away earlier this week.

“Gabriella represented both Elphin Community Games and County Roscommon Community Games at the National Finals on a number [of] occasions.

“May her gentle soul rest in peace.”

The talented sportswoman also played with Carrick-on-Shannon Rugby Club, where her father Dean was once head coach.

In a post, they remembered Gabriella as “a wonderful athlete”: “Carrick On Shannon Rugby Club would like to send our deepest sympathies to the family of Gabriella Weaver who tragically passed away earlier this week.

“Gabi was a wonderful athlete representing Ireland in swimming and was a coach with Trident Swimming Club.

“Gabi also played for Carrick on Shannon RFC for a time and is remembered extremely fondly by all who met her within the club.

“To Dean our former head coach, Samantha Gabi’s mum and our former players Gabi’s brothers Will, Ed, Luke and Robin we send our heartfelt condolences.”

One of the many heartfelt tributes to Gabriella online read: “Rest In Peace Gabi, forever in our hearts, never a day she didn’t have a smile on her face, the laughs and giggles will be my deepest memories and I will cherish them forever and the motivation and drive you brought upon everyone.”

Another said: “Thanks for always motivating me when you were at training and bringing a smile to my face every time I was made do the plank, you were a true blessing to this world and such an inspiration. Very hard news to process, Rest in peace Gabi.”
