The officer was just 24 when he died.

Education Minister Simon Harris was among those who led the tributes to the garda, a decade after the extreme weather conditions led to his death.

Meanwhile, events held in Wicklow in memory of the Garda have raised more than €150,000 for various charities over the past decade.

Yesterday a memorial mass in his honour was held in Manor Kilbride. The bridge at Ballysmuttan was later rebuilt and named in his memory, with a plaque paying tribute. It describes him as “a courageous and selfless young man both in life and in his final moments.”

Ciarán was buried with full garda honours following a funeral where his loved ones were joined by then-taoiseach Enda Kenny and Justice Minister Alan Shatter.
