Tributes have been paid to Detective Adrian Donohoe on the ninth anniversary of his murder.

The Garda Representative Organisation (GRA) posted on social media: ‘Today we remember the gentle giant, Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe taken from us 9 years ago today. The painstaking efforts to bring all involved in his murder to justice continues.’

The officer was shot dead in Bellurgan, Co Louth, in 2013 during a robbery at a credit union in the village.

Detective Donohoe was on a routine escort in an unmarked car, following a previous robbery at the credit union.

Mr Donohoe and his colleague, Detective Garda John Ryan, were ambushed as they were parked up beside Lordship Credit Union.

A gang pulled up and tried to block the entrance to the Credit Union.

Detective Donohoe got out of the unmarked police car and confronted the men, who were wearing balaclavas.

One of the men approached Detective Donohoe and shot him from behind.

Detective Ryan tried everything he could to save his colleague, but Detective Donohoe passed away at the scene.

On Twitter one wrote of Mr Donohoe: ‘Never ever forgotten’.

Former Ulster Unionist MLA, Ross Hussey, writing alongside a picture of the badge of An Garda Síochána, said: ‘Lest we forget their sacrifice.’
