Tributes paid to 'amazing young boy who loved his sport' following death aged 11

Tributes have been paid to an 11-year-old boy from Meath who passed away following a short battle with a brain tumour.

Zak Moran, from Silverlawns in Navan, was diagnosed with a tumour on his brain stem in May 2021.

He underwent surgery soon after but sadly passed away peacefully, at home on Monday, with his loving family.

He was described as a "warrior" who faced his illness with "with courage and determination beyond his 11 years".

An avid sports fan, Zac played GAA and played both football and hurling in the under 12s team for his local GAA club Navan O'Mahony's.

Navan O'Mahony's said they were “heartbroken to have lost our warrior Zak" in social media posts. “Please keep the Moran family in your thoughts at this time," they have written.

Donaghmore Ashbourne GAA added: “Our sincere condolences to the Moran family and all at Navan O'Mahonys GAA from Donaghmore/Ashbourne GAA at the passing of Zak. Truly heartbreaking loss.”

A description on an idonate page to raise funds for Zak's care explained how his life changed last year.

It read: "In the space of just one month Zak’s life has changed from playing all of his sports, Fortnite, and Lego to residing within the hospital.

"He requires a chair for mobility and round the clock care. He is strong, resilient and brave and has faced his illness with courage and determination beyond his 11 years."

His death notice on RIP.ie states that Zak (died) peacefully, at home, with his loving family, after a short illness, which he bore with great courage and bravery.

“Cherished son of Catríona and Dave and brother of Matthew, Danny and Bevin,” it adds.

“Zak will be forever missed by his heartbroken family, his grandparents Pat and Philomena Moran (Navan), John and Pauline Foley (Trim), aunts Paula, Blaithín and Emma, uncles Kenny and Patrick, cousins Jessie, Anna, Honey and Fox, his extended family, great neighbours and his many friends in Navan O’Mahonys GAA club and St Paul’s National School.

In the condolences section, one person has written: “Heartbroken for Zak's family, what a beautiful little boy, fly high little angel. Rest in peace Zak."

“So very sorry to hear about the passing of your little Zak," adds another. "Sincere condolences to Catriona, Dave, Matthew, Danny and Bevin."

“My heart is broken for you and your family. Zak was a wonderful little man and he will never be forgotten. Rest in peace Zak.”

Another person has written: “To the Moran Family thinking of you all at this very difficult time. May God give you strength to get through it. Zak was an amazing young boy who loved his sport.”
