Numerous tributes have been paid to “true gentleman” Enda McCarney, from Co Monaghan, whose body was recovered from the River Shannon on Sunday. 

The funeral mass for the dad-of-five will be held at St Mary's Chapel, Urbleshanny at 11am on Thursday followed by cremation in Lakelands Crematorium, Cavan.

His death notice on RIP.ie adds that Enda, of Derryledigan, Scotstown, (died) tragically and unexpectedly on Sunday, February 13.

“Predeceased by his father Packie,” it reads. "Beloved and much loved husband of Catriona and adored father of Caolan, Finn, Eanna, Emmett and Pearce. Devoted son of Monica and cherished brother of Cathy (Paul Lavery) and Carmel (Jim Mc Connon).

"Enda will be sadly missed and remembered with love by his wife, sons, mother, sisters, Catriona's parents Bridie and Bill Quirk, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family, Enda and Catriona's biker friends and by all who knew and loved Enda."

Among the many tributes left on the condolences page is one that states: “I am so very sorry that Enda, a husband, daddy, son, and brother lost his young life in our town. May god give you strength and courage at this terrible time for you all. Rest In Peace Enda.”

Another adds: “Sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Enda. Thinking of you all at this difficult time. May his gentle soul rest in peace."

One other person has written: “With deepest condolences to Enda’s wife children and the McCarney family on this sad sad time, a true gentleman who will be sadly missed. RIP Enda.”

"To his boys, we are so sorry that you have lost your Dad, the gentle soul that set you on the path of life. To his sisters and extended family, our heartfelt sympathy goes to you all,” another person has written.

“His love for you all was evident when he spoke of you all."

"With deepest condolences to Enda’s wife children and the McCarney family on this sad, sad time, a true gentleman who will be sadly missed. RIP Enda,” adds another.

Other tributes have appeared on various social media including one on the Facebook page of Monaghan GAA who have posted: “Monaghan GAA wishes to convey our deepest sympathies to Castleblayney Hurling County Board Delegate Catriona McCarney (Quirke), the McCarney and Quirke families on the very sad and untimely passing of Enda.”

They have liked the post to one from Castleblayney Hurling who Castleblayney Hurling Club who “would like to extend sincere sympathies to committee member Catriona McCarney (Quirke) on the untimely & tragic passing of her husband Enda McCarney, Scotstown. Sympathies also to the extended McCarney & Quirke families.”

Gardai who had responded to reports that a man had entered the water in Carrick-On-Shannon in Co Leitrim on Sunday subsequently carried out searches, with a body later recovered from the River Shannon that evening.

Members of the force said at the time they were treating the man's death as a tragic accident.
