Three Irish citizens have been evacuated from Afghanistan, the Dept of Foreign Affairs has confirmed.

But it didn't reveal what plane they were on and how they got out.

A handful of others got through the Taliban checkpoints in the city and made it to the airport.

They are now waiting there under American protection hoping to hitch a plane home as soon as possible.

The number of Irish citizens currently seeking to leave the war-torn country is 36 including eight dependents.

However there are also a small number of Irish citizens working for the UN and international organisations and currently plan to stay in Afghanistan.

The Irish embassy in Abu Dhabi is coordinating the rescue of Irish citizens who want to go home and is working with EU and other partners on the ground.

A DFA spokeswoman said; " We do not have a diplomatic or consular presence on the ground in Afghanistan, however working with EU partners we are hopeful that we will be able to facilitate the evacuation of all citizens in the coming days.

" The situation remains fluid and access to the airport remains difficult."
