A teenager who was killed in a single vehicle crash in Mayo late on Saturday night has been named locally as David McHale (17), from Mulrany.

He was the driver of a car in which two others were injured when it crashed at Corha on the Newport Road in Castlebar.

A passenger in his teens was described as being in a serious condition in Mayo General Hospital following the crash.

The second passenger, a man in his 20s, was also treated for injuries which were believed to be less serious.

The crash occurred about 11.50pm.

The Castlebar to Newport Road (R311) was closed for a time to allow a forensic investigation to be carried out.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to the crash to come forward.

They are also appealing to any road users who may have camera footage from the area between 11.40pm and midnight.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Castlebar garda station on 094 903 8200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any garda station.

The crash was the second fatal road incident in less than a week in the Castlebar area.

Last Wednesday, Denis Prosvirnevs, who was originally from Russia, was killed in a hit-and-run crash in the Humbert Way area of the town about 11.50pm.

A man in his 30s was arrested on Saturday in relation to the collision and questioned at Castlebar garda station.

He has since been released without charge.

A file will now be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
