Taoiseach Michéal Martin has described the use of surplus Covid-19 vaccines at Beacon hospital as “unacceptable and repugnant”.

The Taoiseach was speaking at a press conference this afternoon for the publication of the 'Our Rural Future' rural development policy.

Mr Martin described the vaccination scandal, which saw CEO Michael Cullen organise that spare injections be given to some of the staff of a private school in Bray where his children are pupils, as “completely unacceptable”.

It emerged on Friday that the hospital had given 20 vaccines to teachers from the private school.

“What happened there was unacceptable. I’ve condemned it and in my view very, very wrong, just completely unacceptable.

“It’s repugnant to people that something like that would happen and that’s why the administration of the vaccines there has been suspended,” he said.

Mr Martin added that the prioritisation of the vaccine rollout remains with the most vulnerable people in the country.

“The vaccines belong to the people of Ireland.

“The prioritisation to date has been the most vulnerable in terms of senior citizens, both residents and nursing homes, in terms of frontline healthcare workers, in terms of those with underlying health conditions,” he said.

Mr Martin confirmed that the HSE is overseeing an examination of what happened.

He added that there have been clear protocols laid down in terms of prioritisation and the manner in which surplus vaccines are to be used.

It comes as Health Minister Stephen Donnelly directed the HSE to suspend vaccine operations at the Beacon on Saturday after revelations that leftover jabs were given to teachers at the school came to light

Sources said the Government had already applied “significant political pressure” on the Beacon Clinic and on a practical level has removed the Covid-19 vaccination facility from there as soon as scheduled vaccinations take place.
