Tiers for Leo Social media users set up GoFundMe after Leo Varadkar shares pic of tiny birthday cake

"Leo looks like he’s holding that cake hostage"

Social media users have poked fun at Leo Varadkar’s tiny birthday cake after the Tainiste turned 45 on Tuesday.

Taking to Instagram, he shared a picture of himself and partner Matthew Barrett, who turned 33 on Wednesday, enjoying a cake to celebrate their birthdays.

“Joint birthday celebrations after a busy day, ours are one day after another. Joint age 78-I’ll let you guess how to divide it,” he wrote.

The image showed the couple tucking into slices of a small Battenberg cake with two candles perched on top.

“Imagine the misery of having a mid January Birthday and then you're given this cake…” wrote one person on social media.

“Also look at the tiny little sliver that was cut,” another chimed in.

“Look at the tiny slice of cake, probably skint in January waiting for payday,” another added.

“Leo looks like he’s holding that cake hostage,” someone else said.

“A €2 battenburg cake and the book of Mormon soundtrack, dear lord Leo what a sad little life,” someone else wrote, referencing the musical soundtrack on the table next to them.

“Can't say I'm surprised after this pancake,” another added, referencing a photo of an almost transparent pancake shared by the Tainiste on shrove Tuesday in 2018.

Someone even went as far as setting up a GoFundMe titled: “Help Buy Leo & Matt a Proper Birthday Cake” with a goal of €99.

“This is tragic, they need a decent cake,” the page reads.

So far it has one donation of €5 from 'Mary Lou M', who is most likely a practical joker making fun of his political rivalry with Sinn Fein president Mary Lou McDonald.

While there were many who made a joke out of their celebration, there were still some who also took to social media to wish the pair a very happy birthday including Virgin Media's Alan Hughes and TD Josepha Madigan.
