On the brink Senior Ministers meet to discuss moving to Level 5 Covid restrictions
THE Taoiseach, Tánaiste, and senior ministers are meeting tonight to decide what new Covid restrictions to introduce across the country following a detailed briefing from public health officials.
Chief medical officer Dr Tony Holohan, HSE chief executive Paul Reid and other senior public health officials met with Micheál Martin, Leo Varadkar, Green Party leader Eamon Ryan and Ministers Paschal Donohoe, Michael McGrath and Stephen Donnelly on Saturday afternoon.
Following a detailed briefing and Q&A in Government Buildings, the National Public Health Emergency Team's recommendation that Level 5 restrictions be introduced for six weeks is now being considered.
The health officials left Government Buildings shortly after 6pm as the six members Cabinet began discussions on how to respond to the recommendation.
Amid widespread expectations that further restrictions will be announced, Ministers have been put on standby for a full meeting of the Cabinet, although this is thought unlikely to take place until Sunday.
Fine Gael Ministers are now expecting to receive a briefing from Mr Varadkar on Sunday morning. The conference call had been scheduled for this evening but has since been deferred.
