Emergency services are conducting a search and rescue operation after a man was reported missing from Connaught’s highest mountain last night.

Gardaí, Mayo Mountain Rescue, the Irish Coast Guard, and local volunteers have joined forces to search for a lost hillwalker on Mweelrea Mountain, near Westport in Co. Mayo.

The man, who is understood to be aged in his 30s and visiting from the UK, had been hiking on the mountain and alarm was raised on Monday when he failed to return.

Emergency services were notified and subsequently launched a search operation shortly after 9pm on Monday night.

The operation was paused at 2am on Tuesday morning but has since resumed.

A local radio station reported that the Coastguard helicopter had been requested to assist in the search but was unable to take part due to cloud cover.

A garda spokesperson said: “A search and rescue operation involving Gardaí, Mayo Mountain Rescue and Coast Guard commenced shortly after 9pm on Monday 16th August when a hill walker was reported lost on Mweelrea Mountain.

“The operation ceased at 2am this morning but has since recommenced.”
