A seal photographed in Belfast Harbour with a drinks can lodged in its mouth has been rescued in Scotland.

After the photo of the seal emerged, a rescue operation was launched by Belfast Harbour Police, Debbie Doolittle Wildlife Rescue and River Lagan Search and Rescue to try and locate the animal so the can could be removed.

Rescuers were worried that if the can was not removed the seal would have been unable to eat, and could have suffered a horrible death.

However, the meandering mammal has since been located in Scotland, and the can was finally removed from its mouth.

The seal was then released back into the wild afterwards.

Rescue teams had become concerned that the distraught seal had been purposefully staying away from humans when the can was lodged in its mouth due to the distress it was suffering.

The public had been urged to keep an eye out for the seal and to report it if spotted.
