RTÉ has commissioned a live music bonanza for their New Year’s Eve countdown show this Christmas.

A well-placed source confirmed to the Sunday World that Kite Entertainment, who make Gogglebox and Ireland's Fittest Family, won the tender and will produce the music spectacle.

It is understood that promoters MCD are also involved in the TV special which will aim to highlight the best of live Irish music.

The show will replace Una Healy’s New Year’s Eve party, which aired last year.

However, the Saturday’s singer has been given her own Christmas TV special which will be prerecorded and screened over the holiday period.

“Live music has been decimated by the pandemic and hopefully, this show can shine a light on our home-grown talent,” an insider revealed.

“RTÉ is committed to using the public service remit to give bands a platform to showcase their talents.

“This year, because of the health crisis, many Irish people will be ringing in the New Year at home.

“So, there was an opportunity to give them something great and Irish to enjoy the evening where we all, finally, get the chance to say goodbye to 2020.

“There will be live music and craic and all HSE guidelines will be adhered to.

“But think of it as a live festival broadcast to your sitting room.”
