Conference chaos Probe after garda attends press conference while waiting on Covid test result
Journalists and photographers warned of close contact exposure after test is confirmed positive shortly after the press conference.
Gardai are to investigate an incident where a member of the force who was awaiting the result of a Covid-19 test attended a press conference.
Journalists and photographers who attended the briefing were subsequently warned of a potential close contact exposure.
Shortly after the press conference took place, a member of the Gardai who was present received notification of a positive Covid-19 test.
A Garda spokesperson said: “An Garda Síochána can confirm that a member of An Garda Síochána who was present at this media briefing shortly afterwards received notification of a positive Covid-19 test.
“An Garda Síochána is in contact with all media who attended to advise them of this and the relevant public health advice.”
Under public health guidelines, people who are awaiting the results of a Covid-19 test are advised to self-isolate, and not to attend work.
The HSE guidelines state: “You will need to self-isolate while you wait for your test. The people in your household will need to restrict their movements.
“This means they should not go to work or school.”
The Garda spokesperson said: “All members of An Garda Síochána are expected to fully comply with HSE guidelines.
“HSE guidelines, supported by internal An Garda Siochana chief medical officer guidance, have been circulated to all staff members of An Garda Siochana on numerous occasions.
“An Garda Siochana will carry out an enquiry into the circumstances of their attendance at the media briefing.”
A briefing sent out to media members ahead of the press conference advised them that public health guidelines would be followed in respect of social distancing.
The meeting was held indoors “due to the forecast weather conditions”.
Attendees were instructed to bring facemasks which were required to be worn.
