'forever missed' Police in US investigating death of Irishman who died in hit and run collision

Police in San Francisco, California are investigating the death of an Irishman who died in a hit and run collision.

Barry McGrath (38), originally from Galway, was the only fatality in the incident which occurred on January 29th when the Uber he was travelling in was hit by a stolen car.

The driver of the Uber was taken to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries.

The driver of the stolen Audi SUV fled the scene and police are appealing for witnesses.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) said: “On January 29th at approximately 7.34pm, San Francisco Police responded to 46th Ave and Lincoln Ave regarding a hit and run vehicle collision.

"In this incident, a collision occurred between a red/orange Honda SUV and a black Audi SUV, with the severity of the collision causing life threatening injuries to a rear passenger of the Honda SUV.

“The passenger was transported to San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH), where he ultimately succumbed to those injuries.

“The driver of the Honda was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“The driver of the Audi fled the scene prior to police arrival.

“During the course of the investigation it was determined the Audi SUV involved was reported stolen on January 12th 2022.

“The suspect driver is described as a white male, approximately 45 years old with a bald head and possibly over 6 feet tall.

“SFPD Traffic Collision INvestigation Unit investigators are asking for the public’s assistance in locating any witnesses or video surveillance footage that could have captured the incident."

Just days after his tragic death Barry's body was repatriated to Ireland for burial.

His death notice reads: "Barry is predeceased by his loving dad John. He will be forever missed by his heartbroken family, his mam Bernie, sisters Emma and Lisa, his brother Brian and his wife Síofra and by his three adored nephews Ben, Eddie and Timmy, his granny Peggie Duffy, his aunts and uncles, his wonderful circle of first cousins and all his extended family.

"Barry will be missed by all his good friends here and overseas."

Tributes for the Galway man poured in online as police search for his killer.

A member of San Francisco GAA, his friends and team mates said that they were “deeply saddened to announce the sudden passing of Barry McGrath.”

He was a treasurer of the board and a player for St. Joseph’s Hurling club in Silicon Valley.

“As we begin to process this tragic news, we will keep you informed as we receive further updates. We ask you to keep his Family and Friends in your thoughts and prayers," they said, adding: "Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam."
