Penneys is to extend opening hours next week “so there’ll be plenty of time for everyone to visit". 

The budget retailer is gearing up for to open its doors on a full-time basis for the first time in nearly five months from Monday, May 17.

Penneys launched appointment-based shopping in Ireland ahead of the big reopening that saw more than 250,000 slots booked.

With many of the larger stores now fully booked, Penneys is preparing to extend opening hours across all stores.

"As expected, our shopping by appointment slots were very popular: At the last count, over 250,000 appointments have been made, and the majority of our larger stores are now fully booked", a spokesperson said.

"While we appreciate there may be some disappointed customers, they won’t have too much longer to wait: all of our 36 stores will be fully reopen from next Monday 17 May.

"We'll have extended shopping hours in place in every store so there’ll be plenty of time for everyone to visit."

Penneys recently issued a statement after people were selling appointments on the likes of Facebook Marketplace and DoneDeal.

A spokesperson for the company said: "We are delighted at how popular our shopping by appointment bookings this week have proven with over 250,000 appointments made so far.

"While most of our larger stores are now fully booked, any cancelled slots will go back up on the system.

"We recommend that customers book their appointments through our website directly which we know is the case for the vast majority of bookings."

They continued: "It’s been wonderful to be able to welcome so many customers back this week, and for those who missed out on a slot, they won’t have too much longer to wait as all Irish stores will be open to everyone from next Monday with extended hours in each one."
