A family have been left devasted after their pet dog was stolen from their house in Offaly.

Gardaí fear the homes of dog owners are being targeted by gangs after the latest incident.

The family was left in shock after the thieves ransacked their house in Birr on Wednesday, stole some tools and made off with their dog.

Officers are appealing for anyone who might have information.

A garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí in Birr are investigating a burglary that occurred yesterday evening during the course of which a number of tools were taken and this pet dog.

“A black Audi A4 07 car was seen nearby with a number of males. If you passed the School Street, Crinkle location or are offered this dog please let us know at 0579169710.”

It is not the first time that the area has been singled out by pet thieves.

Earlier this year it was revealed how the District Detective Unit at Tullamore with the assistance of Offaly County Council Dog Shelter had rescued stolen dogs.

Gardai warned the public that houses were being targeted by thieves leaving a mark of white paint on the outer walls to signify an animal on the property.

Garda Síochána Laois Offaly posted on their Facebook page: ‘There is some commentary of properties being marked for potential targeting by those involved in thefts.

‘As said before carry out regular checks about your home and perimeter. Report any suspicious behaviour immediately. Report suspicious vehicles to Gardaí and use Community text alert to notify your neighbours.’
