'Cherished son' Monaghan crash victim Fionán Callan to be laid to rest on Friday

The funeral of a young Monaghan man who died in a tragic crash will take place on Friday. 

Fionán Callan, who was in 20s, of Drumlandrick, Castleblayney, died in hospital hours after the early-morning crash on Tuesday.

The two-car collision happened on the R181 in the townland of Muldrumman, outside Castleblayney, at around 6.40am.

Emergency services attended the scene and the young man was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, Co Louth, where he later died.

His death noticed on RIP.ie states that Fionán, cherished son of Brian and Bernadette, (died) following a road traffic accident.

“Sadly missed and remembered with love by his heartbroken and devastated family, parents Brian and Bernadette, brothers Aodhan and Conor, sisters Niamh and Sinéad, and girlfriend Michaela Slowey.

“(Also) his grandmother Maisie O’Reilly (Killann, Shercock), aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family, neighbours, many friends and his work colleagues at Keenan Stainless Steel.”

Fionán’s funeral cortège will travel from the family home on Friday morning at 10.30am to arrive at St Patrick’s Church, Broomfield, for funeral Mass at 11am, followed by burial in adjoining cemetery.

His employer, Keenan Stainless in Co Monaghan, said: "We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of our work colleague Fionán Callan.

"Words don’t do justice the kind, friendly and hard working person he was.”

People have been sending their condolences to the Callan family following the tragedy.

“Our deepest sympathy on the tragic passing off Fionán,” one person has written on his condolences page.

“To Bernadette, Brian and all the Callan family. My god give you strength over the next few days ahead. May he rest in peace. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.”

Another adds: “Our heartfelt sorrow is extended to Brian, Bernadette and all the Callan family on the loss of your lovely son and brother Fionán. May the thoughts and prayers of the Broomfield community and wider area give you strength at this awful time.”

One other person has added: “We are shocked and so sad to hear of the death of Fionan. RIP to Bernadette, Brian, brother, sisters and girlfriend.

"Our sincere sympathy. No words are adequate at this time. In our thoughts and prayers. God send you all comfort at this time.”
