Health Minister Stephen Donnelly has emphasised that Botox clinics operating as beauticians must remain closed under Level 5 restrictions due to the Covid pandemic.

His declaration this week means that an apparent loophole whereby Botox clinics have been operating as they claim to be offering medical procedures with 'injectables' can be acted on by authorities.

This follows revelations by the Sunday World that several such clinics are freely operating around the country, with one chain even offering clients letters for appointments which they maintain will allow them exceed 5km rules and pass through Garda checkpoints.

Mr Donnelly's Botox clinic issuance comes after repeated Dáil questions by Social Democrats co-leader Róisín Shortall on the issue, having been prompted by the Sunday World.

Initially, the minister gave a general outlook in a parliamentary response on what services are not allowed operate under Level 5 restrictions with no reference to beauticians such as Botox clinics.

Ms Shortall appealed this answer and got a more detailed response on Monday.

"I can confirm to the Deputy that as set out at the link, personal services (for example beauticians) are closed under the Level 5 restrictions," Mr Donnelly confirmed.

Last month we revealed how the Sculpture chain of clinics was offering clients letters to get them through Garda checkpoints for appointments.

Their website offers a range of services, including lip fillers, skin, eye and anti-wrinkle procedures.
