Met Eireann issue snow/ice warning for Sligo, Donegal and Leitrim ahead of 'widespread frost'

The warning came into effect on Wednesday, at 5pm and will last until 11am on Thursday, February 10.

The national forecaster warned last night that there could be “wintry showers and icy conditions” in these counties.

A Status Yellow ice warning is also in place for Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone, and Derry.

It came into effect at 6pm on Wednesday and lasts until 10am today, Thursday, February 10.

Met Éireann has warned that icy patches on roads, pavements, and cycle paths may lead to dangerous driving conditions, and urged road users to take care for the duration of the weather warning.

The weather is to continue to be cold, wet, and breezy for the next few days, with unsettled conditions setting the tone for the weekend ahead.

Temperatures are set to plunge as low as minus three degrees tonight with "widespread frost."

Friday morning will get off to a chilly start as a blanket of frost – and in some places ice – covers the country, creating some “hazardous surfaces” that will increase the chance of accidents or injury.

While the morning will feel cool with highest temperatures reaching only five to eight degrees, the dry and bright weather will bring a fresh start to the day. Counties in Ulster will feel the coldest.

However, rain and strong, gusty winds will spread from the west throughout the afternoon, although eastern counties may stay dry until evening.

Saturday will be breezy with widespread showers, with bright spells popping up along the way.

Met Éireann predict that downpour will be heavy at times, with long spells of rain throughout the day.

Temperatures will rise slightly, with highest temperatures hitting eight to 11 degrees.
