A local area committee meeting next Wednesday will decide on how a fitting memorial can be established for air crew member Paul Ormsby who died in the tragic Coast Guard Rescue Helicopter 116 crash.

The bodies of Capt Dara Fitzpatrick and Capt Mark Duffy were recovered in the days following the tragedy in March, 2017.

However, winchmen Ciarán Smith and Ballyfermot man Paul Ormsby, remain lost at sea.

Locals in Ballyfermot, specifically the Oranmore Road area, where Paul lived, have been campaigning to honour Paul’s memory at a local park known as the Tarmac, located between Oranmore and Spiddal.

One resident Dermot Buckley, who is spearheading a commemoration campaign for “the late and missing hero Paul Ormsby” told the Echo newspaper that the idea “is not to name the whole park after him, but something to acknowledge Paul, a consummate professional.”

“A plaque or a stone in the Tarmac, thinking the helicopter would normally land at the tarmac, we could call it Paul Ormsby Tarmac,” he added.

Cllr Daithi Doolan who is involved in the campaign said they understood that the park could not be named after him as it wound not fit the criteria.

“The idea is to have a memorial stone or some sort of fitting memorial installed there in the local square,” he said.

“I will raise this again at the forthcoming area committee meeting on Wednesday.

“We’ve agreed that the park cannot be named after him because we it wouldn’t meet the criteria but we do want to have a tribute there to his bravery to ensure that the family know he is remembered.

“We’d like to have a memorial bench or something like that there so now we want to see how we can move that on.”
