A man is being quizzed by gardai this evening after he was arrested in Cork for allegedly threatening to kill a female Labour MP.

The 41-year-old British national was arrested by officers from the Special Detective Units in both Cork and Dublin, backed up by members of the Cork Armed Support Unit on the southside this morning.

It is understood that 15 gardai were involved in the operation when they moved in to arrest the man at 7.30am at his rented apartment and brought him to the Bridewell for questioning.

According to The Irish Times, gardaí were alerted by British police to the suspect after a person phoned the MP and threatened to kill her on October 18.

Gardaí said this evening that officers in Douglas executed a search warrant this morning, Saturday, November 6, at a residential property.

“During the course of the search a number of electronic items were seized and one man (41) was arrested on suspicion of making threats against a person from outside of this jurisdiction,” gardai said.

“He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at the Bridewell Garda Station.”

They added that investigations are ongoing.

The threat was made just three days after Tory MP Sir David Amess died after being stabbed while holding a constituency clinic at Belfairs Methodist Church Hall on Leighton-on-sea in Essex on October 15.

A 25-year-old man, Ali Harbi Ali has since been charged by the British police with murder and the preparation of terrorist acts.

Five years ago, on June 16, 2016 Labour MP for Batley and Spen, Jo Cox (41) was fatally shot and stabbed outside a library at Birstall in West Yorkshire.

White supremacist, Thomas Mair, shouted ‘Britain First’, as he attacked Ms Cox while she was about to hold a constituency clinic.

He was later jailed for life for the murder of Ms Cox after a seven day trial at the Old Bailey in November 2016.
