A man has been killed in a motorbike crash in Co Westmeath.

The tragic incident happened shortly after 5pm on Sunday on the R400 road at Gainstown, Mullingar.

Gardaí and emergency services raced to the scene where the driver of the motorcycle, a man in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later. It’s understood his motorcycle left the road and struck a ditch.

The man's body was taken to Mullingar Hospital where arrangements will be made for a post-mortem examination and the local Coroner was notified.

A forensic investigation was carried out yesterday evening with local traffic diversions in place.
