The man who was tragically killed in a workplace accident in Cork yesterday was a hard-working father-of-three named locally as Michael McCarthy.

Emergency services rushed to the scene at around 2pm at Carriglusk in Glandore, but Mr McCarthy, aged in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gardai in Clonakilty are investigating all of the circumstances surrounding the tragedy but it is understood he became pinned by an articulated lorry he was working on.

Cllr Joe Carroll said he was friends of the man who died and his family.

“I only got the news there yesterday when I was in Galway,” Cllr Carroll said.

“ I was talking to a few people at home this morning and the whole place is in a major state of shock.

"It’s an awful thing to happen to a young man. He was 44 and he had three kids, aged just 13, 11 and eight.

“He was a plant hire man who was doing machine work."

“I know the family very well,” Cllr Carroll added. “And I was very close to his father who was only buried three years ago and we were all at his funeral.

"He (Michael) was a very hard working man, a great guy to do work and get work done. They live just outside Glandore and all the villages out that way are in a state of shock.

“Myself and everyone here extend their condolences to his family and we all be there at the funeral to support them as we’re all very close to them.”

The incident is being investigated by the Health Safety Authority.
