A man was pronounced dead in hospital last night after he was taken from the sea off Dun Laoghaire. 

Gardai are investigating the tragic incident after the man, who was in his 40s, was taken to St Vincent's Hospital where was later pronounced dead.

Emergency services rushed to the scene after reports of a man entering the water at around 10pm.

Gardai said a post mortem is expected to take place in the coming days.

However, it is understood that the discovery is not currently being treated as suspicious.

A garda spokesman said: "Gardaí and emergency services attended Dun Laoghaire yesterday evening Tuesday 17th August 2021.

"A male aged in his 40s was recovered from the water and taken to St Vincent’s Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

"A post mortem will take place in due course.

"Investigations are ongoing."
