Road death Man (80s) killed and woman injured in crash in Bansha, Co Tipperary

A man in his 80s has died and a woman was injured in a road crash in Co Tippperary earlier today.

The tragic accident happened this afternoon around 3.15pm when the car left the road and struck a tree on the L4306 near Bansha.

No other vehicles were involved.

Gardaí and emergency services raced to the scene where they found two people seriously injured.

The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

His passenger, a woman also in her 80s, was taken from the scene by ambulance to hospital for treatment. Her injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

The man's body was taken to the mortuary at University Hospital Waterford where a post-mortem examination will be arranged. The local Coroner has been notified.

The crash site has been preserved for examination by Garda forensic collision investigators tomorrow morning. The road is currently closed with local diversions are in place.

Gardai have appealed for witnesses to this collision to come forward and also to any road users with camera footage (including dash-cam) from the area at the time, to make it available to investigators.
