The fatal crash happened in the early hours of Friday morning
Two people who died in a fatal single-vehicle crash in the early hours of Friday morning have been named locally.
The three occupants of the vehicle were treated by emergency services personnel for serious injuries at the scene of the crash on the R293 between Ballaghadereen and Gorteen, at Edmonstown road.
Daniel Dolphin (27) from Derroon, Ballymote, died at the scene.
Liga Smolaka (35), from Latvia, was rushed to Mayo University Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
A third person, a man in his 20s, was also taken to the hospital but his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.
The crash site remained closed on Friday for a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.
“Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward,” a Garda spokesperson said.
“Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the R293 at the time of the collision are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.”
“Anyone with information is asked to contact Castelrea Garda Station on 094-9621630, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”
Daniel’s death notice reads: “Deeply regretted by his loving mother Anne, father John, sisters Joanne, Jackie, Ciara, brother Sean, grandmother Pauline Murtagh (Carrownanty), aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.”
His remains will repose at his sister Jackie’s home in Ballymote on Monday March 14th from 4pm to 7pm.
His removal will take place on Tuesday morning before the 12pm funeral mass at Church of the Immaculate Conception, Ballymote.
Burial will take place afterwards at St. Columba’s cemetery.
Paying tribute to Liga Smolaka online, one friend said that the young mother left an imprint on those she knew.
“I’ve worked with, trained, managed so many people but I've rarely come across someone who was so willing to learn and be even better than the teacher.”
“You always laughed, gave 110%, such a dedicated mother and hard worker.”
“I often wondered how you kept your eyes open, sadly they will never open again but I just want you to know that in your oh too short and wonderful life.”
“You left an imprint that not many could make... What a wonderful human being.”
Daniel’s former football club Ballymote Celtic also paid tribute.
“Ballymote Celtic would like to offer their deepest condolences to the Dolphin family on the tragic death of Daniel.”
“Daniel played underage football for the club and also played for the senior team. RIP Daniel.”
