Athlone Mayor Aengus O’Rourke said today: “This morning I visited the site of the burning of three houses in St. Mary’s Place, Athlone to see the extent of the damage and to meet with the local residents. I also met with the Garda Superintendent, David Nolan, at the scene this morning.

“I have asked the Council to immediately arrange to have the affected buildings boarded up as they are now unsafe and present a risk to the public. The owners of these properties will also be required to play their part in resolving this matter.

“Many thanks to Athlone Fire Brigade crews for their great work last night. And, thanks also to the residents locally for their cooperation and patience. We are a lot closer to a solution to this ongoing issue this morning than we ever were,” Cllr. O’Rourke added.
