The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr Hazel Chu, has said she draws a line when racists make remarks about her child.

She revealed that she still gets comments every day questioning her Irishness, despite the fact that she was born here, but that when they “come after my family that's a different issue altogether”.

Even though she was born at the Rotunda Hospital, Cllr Chu told The Hard Shoulder that there are still people who insist on making her feel different.

"There's a small vocal minority that tells you you are different every day,” she said.

"Today it was 'you are a spy from the CCP' and 'no matter how much you try you're never going to be Irish'... yesterday was 'show us your birth cert if you really are Irish'.

"Every day there's something... some kind of comment about whether or not I'm Irish."

She said she receives abusive comments online, by phone and even in the post and admitted that there are some days it does get at her - especially when they focus on her child.

"There was a line about her being a mongrel, and there was a line about being deported back to China to get aborted... that's where I draw the line,” she explained. "I have no problem with you coming after me, but when you come after my family that's a different issue altogether."

There are days when she decides to 'drag' the trolls online, while she also has ordered a punchbag to let out some of her emotions.

She said: "That's going to be my therapy... Any way you can to exert some kind of release... it's always good."

Hazel has also reported some of the abusive comments she's received to gardaí, noting the force has been 'very supportive'.

In November, an emergency motion was raised in Dublin City Council condemning racist social media attacks on Cllr Chu.

The all-party motion was called by Cllr Daithí Doolan to raise the issue of horrific abuse directed at the Lord Mayor during the week.

“The racism that Dublin’s Lord Mayor Hazel Chu has faced since assuming public office is disgraceful,” Sinn Féin Dublin City Councillor Daithí Doolan said. “It is fundamentally wrong and it has to be actively opposed.

“The recent racist tweets targeting An tArd Mheara are a symptom of a deeper racism that needs to be confronted in our society.

“In response to the racist social media attacks on the Lord Mayor all parties on Dublin City Council have put their names to a Sinn Féin motion condemning in the strongest possible terms the racist tweets sent to Cllr Hazel Chu

“I am delighted that all parties have signed up to this motion. We may be from different political parties but we stand shoulder to shoulder against racism.”
