There have been calls for action after a series of fires were set in the Dublin suburb of Finglas with images of flames reaching into the sky posted on social media.

In a post on the Finglas Talks Facebook page, one person has posted the pictures alongside a demand that parents keep a closer eye on their children.

In the post the person has written: “30-plus kids in Dunnes Car Park every night, they only went and set fire to pallets/tyres last night.

“I am living on this road 44 years and have never seen it so bad. All the neighbours are terrified and if you say anything to them, your house becomes a target.

“Finglas has a lot of good people who are proud of where they come from, myself included. But this carry on needs to stop.

“It’s destroying our area,” the post adds. “The local residents need help from our local TD’s & Community Guards and plead with parents to please keep their children away from Dunnes car park.

Local councillor Keith Connolly replied to the post that he understood the gardai had attended the scene on “two occasions last night”.

“I will chat to the Inspector to ask that a policing plan is put in place," he added
