Leo Varadkar has been branded a “big geek” by his Instagram followers after he posted a snap wearing a Star Wars tie to mark May the Fourth.

The day is celebrated as Star Wars day as the date is a pun for the franchise’s popular phrase “May the force be with you.”

Taking to Instagram, the Tánaiste shared a selfie that shows him smiling and dressed in a suit and tie.

His tie is patterned with white Stormtooper helmets and black Darth Vader helmets.

“Finally have a chance to wear this. May the fourth be with you,” he captioned the snap.

“Lol, ya big geek,” one follower commented jokingly.

“The force is strong with you,” another quipped.

A third added: “Class, I love it.”

The phrase was reportedly first recorded on May 4th 1979 when the Tory party published an advertisement in the London Evening News to congratulate Margaret Thatcher for being elected Prime Minister.

“May the Fourth be with you Maggie,” the notice read.
