Leinster House is to undergo further renovations with the roof over the members' restaurant replaced and repaired, less than two years after a €17m project was completed at the complex.

The maintenance and repair works are being overseen by the Office of Public Works (OPW) and also aim to make part of the parliament building more energy efficient.

It said there have been issues with leaks and water ingress on the single-storey flat roof over the restaurant used by TDs and senators on the Merrion Street side of the complex.

Preliminary "opening up" work has already taken place to consider the scale of the project before a tender for the project was issued.

An OPW spokesperson said the roofing finish and glazing will need to be replaced.

"As part of the replacement of the roofing finish, the insulation will be augmented to improve the energy efficiency of the single-storey building," she said.

She said the tendering process is currently under way and prospective costs were not being disclosed yet as they are commercially sensitive.

There are no plans to move or relocate the members' restaurant while the work is ongoing.

The OPW said it would work with the Houses of the Oireachtas to ensure minimal impact on the ongoing functions of the building.

A significant restoration of the Georgian part of the block was completed in 2019.

The total projected spend was just under €15m, but cost overruns saw the final works bill total €17m.

"OPW undertake continuous works within the Leinster House Complex and other State complexes to ensure buildings are kept in working order and upgraded as necessary in line with regulations," the OPW spokesperson said.
