The Cork man whose drone proposal to his Brazilian girlfriend on top of a West Cork cliff top went viral has said he is delighted it has brought a smile to so many faces.

Blue Cassidy from Castletownbere pretended to his girlfriend, Maria Gilvanda, that they were shooting a tourism promotional video as they posed on a picket blanket on the west Cork headland.

But then Blue stunned Maria by having an engagement ring dropped off by a drone operated by Niall Duffy of West Cork Photos.

After the drone landed on the headland and Blue safely secured the ring he got down on one knee to propose to Maria who said yes.

The delighted couple are now planning their nuptials next year but Blue said he has been amazed by the reaction.

“It’s been a bit crazy to be honest,” he told sundayworld.com. “It's just one of those things but we never expected it to go so big as it did.

“But we’re delighted to bring a smile to people’s faces. It’s great to get such a warm reaction while cheering up people from the whole Covid thing.”

Blue said it was his idea for the daring proposal and it was Niall who helped him to pull it off.

“I think it was a good idea; Niall had the drone and the experience in operating it, to make it work, so it was a team effort really.

“It took months to plan,” he added, “to find the right time to make an excuse to get Maria down there and have Niall there with the drone so there were a few things going on.

“It was a bit touch and go,” he revealed. “The distance from the ring to the drone was about 10 or 15 feet or even more. As soon as the wind caught it, it was pushing the drone sideways and it sent it into a bit a of pendulum swing. It looked crazy when the drone was coming towards us because it was swinging so high, but thankfully Maria had no idea.”

Blue told how Maria had played a trick on him on Valentine’s Day when she gave him a ring box stuffed with euros and pretended that she was proposing.

“But she was actually giving me a present so I could buy a fishing rod because she knows I love fishing,” he said.

“She believed the excuse when I got Niall to ask us would we do this promotional tourism video.

“She thought Niall had sent something out on the drone to do with the shot. She didn’t have a notion until I pulled the ring out and started to say something. It’s hard to recall exactly what I said but it was a mishmash of three or four traditional cheesy lines with a bit of my own stuff. I think I said you make me the happiest man on this cliff.”

The couple who are together for two years first met in a nightclub in Cork city.

“It was love at first sight,” Blue recalls. “The next thing is sparks were flying.”

Now Maria has featured in newspapers and on the TV news at home in Brazil.

“They picked up the story so she was on a five minute segment last night with her family watching her on telvision, which is pretty special for her.”

Asked about any further daring plans for their big day Blue said it was a case of letting “everything cool down a bit.. but we’re thinking of June or July next year.”
