An Irishman has been fined for animal cruelty after abandoning his dog outside an animal shelter in Thailand.

The man was accused of leaving the dog - called 'Johnny Cash' - on the road outside Soi Dog Foundation shelter during a heavy storm on the island of Phuket.

According to local media, he was caught on CCTV leaving the dog and driving off.

It is claimed the dog then ran down the road trying to catch up his with his owner as he sped off down the road.

However, the Irishman - who has lived in Thailand for a number of years - was traced to an address in Phuket and charged.

He subsequently paid a fine and received a criminal record.

Deputy Supt Lt Col Watcharin Jirattikarnpiwat said he hoped the case would serve as a warning to others.
