Boy Donie good Irish reporter Donie O'Sullivan praised for coverage of US Capitol protests

Irish journalist Donie O’Sullivan has become on overnight sensation following his dramatic coverage of the unrest at the US Capitol. 

The Co Kerry native started trending on social media for his reporting from the scene as supporters of outgoing president Donald Trump stormed the building.

He calmly relayed news back to the CNN studio as viewers across the world watched in horror as the drama unfolded.

Comedian Dara Ó Briain was amongst those who congratulated the reporter, saying “CNN just introduced a reporter called Donie O’Sullivan and fair dues, he sounds exactly like you’d hope”.

John King, CNN’s chief national correspondent, described Mr O’Sullivan as “awesome”.

Screenwriter Declan Lawn said of O’Sullivan: “All the other CNN correspondents can’t believe this stuff and are freaking out but Donie O’Sullivan is strolling around like he’s seen far worse coming out of a Carlow nightclub.”

Another female fan posted a picture of herself with a video, saying 'I don’t think I quoted you accurately but this Irish American is very proud'.

Trade unionist Brendan Ogle added: "All joking aside, you mind yourself #donie. Fantastic reporting. It really was class. There’s ‘something 'bout Donie."

Another added: "As a member of the US Gay Irish delegation my husband and I would agree to the motion of wanting some of @donie."

Another fan tweeted: "We're all very proud of @donie but we also all want him to be safe and to go home now for a nice cup of tea and a bath."

Donie's sister tweeted proudly: "Well, everyone seems to know my brother now. So proud of you Donie. Up Kerry!"

Responding to the outpouring on social media, O’Sullivan said on Twitter that he was “overwhelmed by all the love from Ireland tonight."

O’Sullivan has been working as a reporter with CNN for almost five years and prior to this spent over two years working as a journalist for Storyful in New York and Dublin.
