reel-y odd Irish conspiracy nuts claim lack of cinema listings means impending lockdown

Some of the bigger cinema chains in the UK have dismissed the theory, although this has not stopped the conspiracy from spreading here

A cinema conspiracy that suggests a lack of listings next week is a sign that another lockdown is on the way has spread to Ireland.

A number of people on social media have jumped on the fact that there are no film listings at cinemas around the UK beyond the end of this week as a sign the government there is about to bring in a further severe lockdown.

Twitter in particular has been a source of speculation that the lack of listings for films beyond this Thursday means the government is planning new restrictions.

Some of the bigger cinema chains in the UK have dismissed the theory, although this has not stopped the conspiracy from sowing seeds of doubt here in Ireland.

A spokesperson for Odeon in the UK told the Liverpool Echo that there has been a slight delay in listing films for next week because the festive period included a number of bank holidays, which set things back.

He said film listings for the next week should appear on websites shortly.

Similarly, a representative for Cineworld said the situation with listings not being published beyond the end of this week was simply a scheduling issue.

On Twitter, Cineworld responded to one person who asked the company if there was 'something you know that we don't' before adding '#NoMoreLockdowns #MissingCinemaListings.'

The company said: "Hi, we are in the process of updating our film times, these should be available to book later this evening. Please keep an eye on our website for an update."

One tweet from an account called ‘A Mandate Free Ireland’ states: “Chech (sic) the cinema listings, nothing from 6th..what's going on? Another loocccddown? (sic)”

To which ‘Ireland against Fascism’ replied: “As if our world isn’t crazy enough, the anti-everything crowd always do their best to make it worse.”

“Big things coming on the 6th or 7th," one person has suggested, while another adds, perhaps with tongue in cheek: “Big cinema getting the info first”.

Another adds: "I'd say it's something to do with the 5g. There's always an agenda with them.”

Others appear to be taking the conspiracy seriously.

“Ye, I see there’s no movies shown in Odeon either, between the schools given the kids their books before the Xmas to take home and now this I think they all have to know something,” another suggests.

However, others have pointed out: “The cinemas don’t post listings after Thursdays, they update on a Thursday for the next week. Nothing sinister in this one.”

Another states: “No the cinema listings always renew on a Thursday just like they always did for flip sake.”
