Former Lord Mayor Christy Burke has said that inner-city residents are “outraged and disgusted” at an alleged axe attack which was captured on video.

Footage of the incident posted on social media yesterday appears to shows one man swinging an axe into another man’s head.

Another man can be seen throwing a bike at one of his rivals.

A source told the Sunday World that the row was part of a feud between a group of individuals from the Pearse Street area and a separate group from the Sheriff Street area.

Speaking to the Sunday World, Independent councilor for the area, Christy Burke, said that local residents have told him they are horrified at the gruesome nature of the alleged assault.

“This is not a common or everyday occurrence,” he told the Sunday World.

“I hope it is a one off, an isolated incident.

“I have heard from tough guys this morning and yesterday who have said that this behaviour is absolutely disgusting.

"Local residents from the Sheriff Street/North Wall area were on to me this morning and they were outraged and disgusted and appalled by what they have seen on the video.”

Gardai this morning confirmed that they are still investigating the alleged attack but said that no arrests have been made.

“Gardai are investigating an assault incident that occurred in the Windmill Lane / Creighton Street area of Dublin 2 on 03/11/2020 at approximately 2pm,” read the statement.

“Following an altercation between a group of youths, involving the use of weapons, three male youths were taken to hospital, one with serious injuries.

“None of the injured youths received life threatening injuries.

“No arrests have been made but investigations are ongoing.”

Cllr Burke has said that incident has left a bad taste in the mouths of inner city residents who had enjoyed a positive Halloween weekend.

“The mood has plummeted in town if I am honest because they had a great weekend over Halloween.

“That was topped off with a great Luke Kelly costume that went viral and was great news for the area.

“And then this has happened and, really what that does, is it brings down the area and the decent, genuine people in the area, are tarred by this brutal attack.

“But I have never had as many calls over anything in my life from my constituents form the inner-city and they are disgusted and outraged by the attack.

“An axe for God’s sake, that’s disgusting.”
