Glowing tributes have been paid to a young Enniscorthy mother who passed the day after marrying her beloved partner from her hospital bed.

Lisa O’Connor-Freeman, formerly of the Ross Road and Templescoby, lost her short but brave battle with illness on Sunday, just one day after tying the knot with her beloved partner Philip “Powder” Freeman.

Lisa had just become a mother for the first time back in October as she and Philip welcomed baby Phia. Devastatingly, the young family's best laid plans were dashed, however, when the school teacher was diagnosed with an aggressive illness which proved terminal.

Completely inseparable, it was Lisa’s dying wish to marry her beloved Philip, who only proposed to her in her hospital bed on Friday.

In an emotional post on Instagram on their wedding day, he said: “Yesterday I took the plunge to ask the love of my life to marry me.

Then today we tied the knot and got married! The happiest day of my life. She has made me the proudest, happiest man that has ever walked on God’s earth!”

That joy was to turn to devastating sadness just a few short hours later, however, as Lisa succumbed to her illness and passed away.

The news was confirmed by Philip who said: “It is with a very heavy heart that I am delivering the news that my new wife and Phia’s mother Lisa has passed away after a short battle with her illness.

"Thanks to everyone for the messages, kind words and offers of help at this sad time. All are welcome on Wednesday to show their love for Lisa.”

The daughter of Christy and Jenny O’Connor, and loving sister to Tracy, Lisa was a popular member of staff at the CBS Secondary School in Wexford town. The school will remain closed tomorrow (Wednesday) as a mark of respect, as Lisa’s funeral mass takes place at St Aidan’s Cathedral.

Informing parents and students of her passing, the school said that Ms O’Connor-Freeman was “held in very high esteem” by all of her colleagues and students.

In the tribute the school said: “Your sudden death has touched our lives and hearts dear colleague, the way you have inspired us touched us even more”.

The school extended its sympathies to Lisa’s heartbroken family, as did Sacre Coeur boxing club in Enniscorthy, which cancelled all its training sessions, while the Shamrocks Ladies Football Club also offered its deepest condolences.

Local councillor John O’Rourke, a resident of the Ross Road himself, said that the community was struggling to come to terms with such a devastating loss.

"Lisa was a loving, caring person, neighbour, friend, daughter and wife,” he said. “She was a true asset to the people of the Ross Road.

"She was a shining light and always had a gentle smile for all when she was out on her long strolls in all weathers. It's a terrible loss and I’d like to express my sincere sympathy to all her family.”

Lisa is sadly missed by her heartbroken husband, infant daughter, parents, sister, aunts, uncles, father-in-law Noel, mother-in-law Mag, brothers-in-law, sister-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives and many friends.

She will be reposing at Browne’s Funeral Home Tuesday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. for family and friends. Her funeral mass will take place at 12 noon at St Aidan's Cathedral with burial afterwards in St Mary's Cemetery. May she rest in peace.
