Hail-oween Halloween hell as Met Éireann issue five wind warnings ahead of 'severe gusts'

Met Éireann has warned that some areas will be battered by “severe or damaging gusts” tonight after issuing five Status Yellow wind warnings.

Alerts are in place for 26 counties throughout Ireland this evening, with a gale warning issued for all Irish coasts including the Irish Sea.

West to northwest winds may reach speeds of up to 65km/h with gusts of up to 90-110km/h in Munster this evening with a wind warning in place until 8pm.

A separate warning is in place for the Galway and Mayo area until 10pm tonight, while an alert is in effect until 6am on Monday morning in Donegal, Leitrim, and Sligo.

A forecaster cautioned: "Northwest winds will reach mean speeds of up 65km/h with gusts of up to 90-110km/h and higher gusts along coasts and exposed hills."

Met Éireann have also issued a Status Yellow warning for Cavan, Monaghan, Longford, Louth, Meath, Westmeath, Roscommon from 6pm on Sunday until 5am Monday morning.

The fifth and final wind warning is in place for Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Offaly, Wexford, Wicklow until 11pm Halloween night.

The blustery night will see “some severe and damaging” winds with higher gusts along coasts and exposed hills.

Long spells of rain will turn into isolated showers from the southwest as the evening progresses, but heavier downpours are expected to return later in the night.

The national forecaster has also issued a Status Yellow Gale warning and a small craft warning.

Westerly winds, veering northwesterly will reach gale force 8 or strong gale force 9 on all Irish coastal waters and on the Irish Sea.
