A community fundraiser has raised thousands of euros for the family of 12-year-old Wiktor Chojecki, who died while driving a car which collided with a lorry last week.

The young boy died after the car collided with a lorry at Rineroe, situated just outside Adare village, at around 2am last Friday. He was the sole occupant of the car.

Gardaí are currently investigating the circumstances which led to the boy being behind the wheel of his family’s Nissan Qashqai.

A funeral mass for Wiktor will take place tomorrow in his hometown of Newcastle West.

A local fundraising effort to contribute towards funeral costs has now raised more than four times its original target.

The GoFundMe page, set up by Newcastle West resident and Polish native Dominika Hogan, had a goal of raising €2,000 for Wiktor’s family.

To date, €8,155 has been donated to the cause.

On the GoFundMe page, Ms Hogan said that the aim of the fundraiser is to “make things a little easier for the family.”

She said: “As we all know by now, the tragic circumstances that had occurred over the weekend, a little man has lost his life.

“We’re trying to make things a little easier for the family by raising funds to go towards funeral costs an furthermore to help our friends through what's going to be a very tough road ahead.

“Any donations will be really appreciated. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Ms Hogan had previously organised a vigil for the young boy, which took place in Newcastle West on Sunday.

Balloons were held by the hundreds that attended the vigil, where the first year student was described as a “lovely little chap” who was “kind”.

“As a member of the Polish community in Newcastle West, it saddens me to say that one of our good friends has lost their son fatally in a car accident,” Ms Hogan wrote on social media.

“To show support to Wiktor’s family and as a mark of respect I would like to invite everyone who would like to let off a balloon in memory of Wiktor to The Square in Newcastle West at 3pm.”
