Gardaí renew appeal for witnesses to crash that killed Louth dad Colin Meegan

The crash involved a car and a pedestrian and took place on Sunday, 27th March 2022 at Martin’s Cross on the R215 in Rossmakay, Dundalk, Co. Louth at approximately 9.50pm.

Gardaí are renewing their appeal for witnesses to a fatal car accident in Co Louth last month.

The crash involving a car and a pedestrian took place on Sunday, 27th March 2022 at Martin’s Cross on the R215 in Rossmakay, Dundalk, at approximately 9.50pm.

The casualty, father-of-two Colin Meegan, who was aged in his 50s and from the Carrickredmond, Kilcurry area, later died in hospital.

He passed away “peacefully” in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda on Saturday, 16th April.

It is understood that he had been receiving life support at the hospital in the weeks following the accident.

No other injuries were reported.

Gardaí are now renewing their appeal for witnesses to this collision to contact them.

Any road users who were travelling on the R215 in Rossmakay between 9.45pm and 10pm and who has camera (including dash cam) footage, is asked to make this available to investigating Gardaí.

Tributes are now being paid online to the Louth man, fondly referred to as ‘Meego’, with his local rugby club celebrating him as “a true club legend.”

Dundalk Rugby Club wrote: “Rest In Peace Colin Meegan, one of the greatest characters to cross the gates in Mill Road. Your laughter and kindness will never be forgotten. A true club legend. #black&white army”

Another person said: “Sincere condolences to his family and friends, Colin was a true gentleman who always found time to say hello & spread a bit of fun and laughter, he will be missed by many. RIP.”

A third wrote: “An absolute gentleman and hard as nails. Young lads coming into a team were as safe as houses with Meego to mind ya. The best craic too. A tragedy."

Local Fine Gael Senator John McGahon shared a photo of Mr Meegan in his rugby days and added: “One of the greats.”
