Gardaí from Malahide Garda Station were on late night patrol in the area over the weekend after recent anti-social behaviour caused concern in the seaside town.

In a tweet today, gardai said that officers were out on patrol in Malahide/Portmarnock to help tackle anti-social behaviour as part of Operation Irene.

Operation Irene, which is being rolled out again this year, will see officers from the public order unit dispatched to areas which have endured anti-social behaviour in the past.

Other Dublin areas, including Howth and Portmarnock, have seen gardaí step up patrols in recent years.

A video recently emerged of people jumping on the bonnet of a car that had stopped at traffic lights in the centre of Malahide Village.

It prompted fresh debate about how to tackle issues around anti-social behaviour and illegal street drinking.

A member of the Malahide Old Road Residents Association told one Dublin radio station how they have “adults of all ages drinking on the street, urinating on the street and using our front doors as their own personal latrines.

"And then you're saying well it's all the kids' fault that we've got to this and actually it's not, it's from the top.

"We need to address it as a community. "

It was revealed that the Malahide Forum, which is a residents body that represents 8,000 people in Malahide, was writing to the gardaí and the council and other residents associations, calling for a community plan.
