Gardai have issued a warning over scam calls and texts about the Covid-19 vaccine that are being sent out to steal personal information.

Gardaí say that these texts usually ask people to confirm private details, such as their PPS number, date of birth and address.

The callers usually ask people to make an appointment for their vaccine at a random hospital.

In most cases, the person receiving the call will say they are not in a position to travel to that particular hospital.

This then allows the caller to get further personal information, as some individuals may reveal their home address or that they live alone. The caller then offers to come to their home to administer the vaccine.

As a result, the Health Service Executive (HSE) have said that they will never text or call individuals requesting personal information, and that they will never request payment for a Covid-19 test or vaccine.

The vaccine is free, and it will not be available privately. Additionally, local GPs will be the first point of contact about vaccination or testing, and as such residents should be wary of these scam calls and texts.

Gardaí have asked the public to contact any of their vulnerable friends or family members to ensure they do not fall for these scams.

They have sent out several tips to make sure that people avoid these fraudulent messages, such as advising people to never disclose private information over the phone or via text messages.

If someone receives one of these messages, it’s best to just hang up and ignore it.

Anyone who mistakenly provides personal information in response to this scam should contact report the matter to their local Garda Station.

If anyone has any questions or concerns relating to Covid-19 testing or vaccination, they should contact their local GP.
