Gardai are investigating the discovery of a car that it is believed could be linked to a long-term missing persons case.

Members of the Garda Water Unit arrived in Crosshaven today following the discovery of a car underwater yesterday.

The car was discovered near Hugh Coveney Pier by members of the Cork City Missing Persons Search and Recovery group, who were carrying out a routine operation in the area. They were using a sonar device which aided their discovery.

They alerted emergency services following the discovery.

Gardaí have not commented but are believed to be investigating whether the discovery is linked to a missing person’s case going back almost two decades. The pier has been sealed off pending the investigations.

A Garda spokesperson said the car was “there a long time” and gardaí are currently “trying to identify where it came from and how long it has been there”.

The car is said to be in very poor condition.
