Gardaí are investigating the death of a man in the Mount Brandon area in Co Kerry.

Gardai and ambulance services were called to the scene after a man in his 50s fell ill on Thursday.

“The man was later pronounced dead at the scene,” gardai said. “The body has since been removed to Kerry University Hospital Morgue where a post mortem will be conducted at a later date.”

It is understood that the hiker was walking with a group on the pilgrim route when he took ill.

A rescue helicopter was called to the scene but was unable to reach the man due to poor visibility.

Members of the group attempted to give the man CPR before a rescue team from the Dingle Coast Guard and Kerry Mountain Rescue arrived at the scene around 3.30pm.
