Gardai are appealing for witnesses after a cyclist was seriously injured in a crash in Co Offaly.

Local officers were called to the scene of the collision involving a car and a bicycle in Birr on Sunday, October 11.

The male cyclist, who is in his 60s, was badly hurt when he was hit by a car in the Syngfield area at approximately 10am.

The casualty was taken by ambulance to the Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar, before being transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin where his condition is understood to be serious.

A Garda forensic collision investigations team carried out an investigation and the road has since reopened to traffic.

A spokesperson for An Garda Siochana said: "GardaĆ­ are appealing for any witnesses, or any road users who may have dash-cam footage, who were travelling in the area to contact Birr Garda station on 057 916 9710, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station."
